Where We Eat Mexican Food in Carpinteria (and Exactly What to Order)
I've been so blessed to grow up in this amazing community, one that's deeply rooted in Mexican culture. And that means we've got incredible Mexican food right at our fingertips.
We eat Mexican food three to four times a week. Seriously and I don’t think there is a Mexican food I have met and don’t like. But here's the funny thing: my family never sits around asking, "Which Mexican restaurant do you want to go to?" It all depends on what we're craving. When my kids say they want burritos, I know exactly where we're going. Breakfast burrito? Different story. Sit-down dinner? Totally different story.
So here's how it works in my family.
Mornings: Reynaldo's Bakery
If it's morning, we're going to Reynaldo's. Hands down. This family-owned bakery on Linden Avenue has been a fixture in Carpinteria since 1980, and it's been such a big part of our life. They've made birthday cakes and wedding cakes for my family, so there are a lot of special memories tied up in that place.
Cherry pie is my mom's favorite, so I always make sure to stop in and grab one on Christmas Eve. I also pick up their pre-made cookie packs every holiday season to share with my clients. And of course, the tamales.
What to order: The best breakfast burrito in town, custom made however you like it. Make sure you get potatoes inside! My favorite is the chorizo. And my secret hangover cure? The tamales with a fried egg on top. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out.
Busy Nights: Taco Grande
When we've had a crazy day, or a water polo practice or game runs late and the kids want burritos, it's Taco Grande on Casitas Pass for the win.
What to order: My kids love the Cali burrito, which has all the usual goodness plus french fries stuffed inside. My absolute favorite is the chile relleno burrito. If the abuela is working in the back, I guarantee it'll be the best chile relleno you've ever had in your life, all wrapped up with beans, rice, and cheese. Oh my gosh, so good.
After-School Tacos: Tacos Don Roge
Also on Linden, Tacos Don Roge is the spot for street tacos. They're the least expensive in town, and my kids stop there for after-school tacos on the regular.
Sit-Down Dinners: Delgado's
When we want a real, sit-down meal, it's Delgado's. It's been a pillar of this community since 1947, and it's actually where my mom had her very first job.
We eat there so often that our waitress doesn't even write down our order, and she's surprised when we change it up. My husband gets the rajas con pollo. I get the fajitas, which is enough to fill me up with plenty left to take home or share with one of the kids. My daughter always gets the hamburguesa. Who knew you could get a hamburger with a side of rice and beans? One thing's for sure: the chips will keep coming. And I'll be having a skinny margarita with lots of salt on the rim.
Insider tips: The carnitas are the bomb, but they're only on Sundays. If you're lucky, there'll be some left over on Monday. My other go-to is the arroz con pollo.
Authentic Tacos: Rincon Alteño
If you want super authentic tacos, head to Rincon Alteño on Via Real. The crispy tacos are a 10 out of 10. It's a no-frills, no-small-talk kind of place, so don't expect a warm welcome, and you may slightly fear for your life, but trust me…. Just order, grab your food, the tacos are worth it!
Feeding a Crowd: Reyes Market
Reyes Market is my go-to for catering. When I know I've got a super busy week ahead, or I'm having a bunch of people over for dinner, I stop in and grab a tray of rice and a tray of beans. The prices are great and they never disappoint. My family will literally eat that rice and beans all week long and be happy as clams.
